The heating bill is decided in the factory
A timber wall's energy performance is decided long before anyone turns on the heating. It is set at the saw table: in the continuity of the insulation layer, the precision of the cut, the materials specified. That is why Uniqa treats sustainability as a production question, not a policy one.
Inside Uniqa's production hall, a worker feeds a length of timber into the saw. The cut lands where the drawing says it will. It is an ordinary moment on the factory floor, and it is where much of a building's future energy use is decided.
The critical stages of construction move indoors
Prefabrication takes the decisive stages of a build, the cutting, the assembly and the insulation, out of the weather and into a controlled factory environment, where materials, consumption and quality are managed with precision. The variability that defines a traditional site largely disappears, and with it much of the waste tied to on-site execution. Uniqa's experience across its own projects is that roughly half of that waste never occurs: an internal observation, not a certified figure, but a consistent one.
One uninterrupted insulation layer is the energy argument
Energy performance in a timber-frame wall comes down to continuity and precision. The thermal-insulation layer runs without interruption; execution tolerances keep it that way; the materials do the rest. Uniqa builds with technically processed, certified wood-based materials, including the Steico range, selected for how they behave in an industrialised process and for what they contribute to the finished building's performance. Wood carries the structure inside a system engineered for stability, durability and predictable behaviour over time. The result is lower energy consumption over the long term, not because of a label, but because of what is inside the wall.
nZEB-aligned, even where the law does not ask
Uniqa's systems are aligned with nZEB-type standards, the European nearly zero-energy building benchmark, including in markets where local legislation does not require it. A factory product does not change its build-up at the border. The panel that ships is the panel that was engineered, wherever it is going.
Sustainability here is not a programme layered on top of production. It is the production: a continuous insulation layer, certified wood-based materials and factory-controlled execution, aligned with nZEB-type standards even where no regulation demands it.
What production itself leaves behind, the wood offcuts, is a separate discipline, the factory's waste streams rather than the building's performance, and it has its own note in this series.
